Humboldt Park Fieldhouse in Humboldt Park (4/2/21)
Five locations from CBA’s Michaelsen & Rognstad Map
Through the 1920s and early 30s the Norwegian-Americans Michaelsen & Rognstad designed buildings all over the city in a multitude of styles. The business leaders of Chicago’s then new Chinatown as well as the city’s parks district provided M & R with plenty of work. Below are just five examples.
To give us an idea of the buildings’ use through time, I’ve included the tenants listed in Polk’s 1928 Directory of Chicago and subsequent newspaper articles. Check out the blog of Chicago architecture writer Julia Bacharach for a more detailed history and the Michaelsen & Rognstad Map to find the locations of 35+ buildings.
Moy Family Association in Chinatown (4/19/22). In 1932 the Moy Family Association hired M&R to make alterations to a pre-existing building (1912). The family association continues on the top floor. From 1933-1980s other floors were occupied by Gerald Moyes’ privately owned Ling Long Chinese Museum, some of the collection is part of the nearby CCA Museum. Since the 1990s it has been Emperor’s Choice Restaurant.
2 Flat in Portage Park (2/27/25) A permit was issued in 1922 to build a flat building for owner Ed Johnson. Polk’s 1928 shows Ed (EW) and Lillian Johnson in one unit, GM & Dora Ackerman in the other. Both men are listed in the 1930 Census as being in the paper carton business. In 1954 retired bank VP Fred Hoff died in his home here leaving wife Catherine. It remains a 2 flat today.
Austin Town Hall Park Fieldhouse in Austin (9/17/18 & 8/21/25). Built in 1929 Austin’s former town hall takes its inspiration from Philadelphia’s Independence Hall. I haven’t been able to find out if the colonial general medallions dotting the building are meant to be specific people. As a community center it has hosted countless neighborhood activities/meetings. Among them, I found a 1935 announcement for a speech to be given by aviator Amilia Earhart. I didn’t find any follow up stories.
Former Eliot Varnish in Lawndale (4/14/25). We are looking at some basic industrial use here. The middle four story section is the first, permitted in 1928. Here’s a drawing of its planned look. The corner building was added in 1937, then it gained a floor in 1952. The company did varnish and paint. I don’t know what’s happening here now. The sculptures in the top pic belong to neighbor Standard Marble & Granite
Humboldt Park Fieldhouse in Humboldt Park (4/2/21) The Georgian Revival building was built in 1928. Like Austin Town Hall the neighborhood activities it has hosted is multitude. From the 1930s-50s it held a lapidary workshop. In 1956 a submarine was built. Today it is a site for the park district’s boxing program.
