Six homes of nine victims of the passenger boat disaster
This week is the 110th anniversary of the SS Eastland’s July 24, 1915 capsizing on the Chicago River. The boat was charted by Western Electric to carry over 2000 workers and their guests to an annual company picnic in Michigan. Still at the dock in downtown Chicago, it rolled over, throwing many of the attendees into the water and killing 844. Former home of Ewald Pansegrau in Gage Park (4/24/25). Originally Swiss, he was 19 years old, single, and employed at Acme Steel. He is buried at Bethania Cemetery in Justice. The Chicago Daily Tribune (CDT) obit.
Former home of the Martons (7/18/24). The WE cabinet maker Paul Sr (37) died with son Paul Jr (12) leaving wife Katherine and four other children. Listed as Hungarian, three of the four other children were living in Vienna at the time, CDT obit. Both are buried under the name Pavel at Bohemian National Cemetery in Chicago. In a recent Block Club study asking people what neighborhood they lived in, it was left gray “because not enough respondents identified and agreed on a name…“
Sisters Catherine & Nellie Moran’s former home in North Lawndale (12/9/24). Catherine (22) & Nellie (18) were both WE employees supporting their mother and three younger sisters, CDT obit. They are buried at Mt Carmel in Hillside. The Kildare Block Assoc sign is an example of the many neighborhood block clubs throughout the city.
William Siegman (25) lived at 3003 (at left) in Avondale with mother Margaret and five siblings (5/23/24), CDT obit. He is buried at St Joseph Cemetery in River Grove. Click through for his picture.
38 year old Western Electric cabinet maker John Uebel lived in this West Humboldt Park home with wife Minnie and two children (9/25/24), CDT obit. Born in Austria, he is buried in Montrose Cemetery in Chicago.
The former home of siblings Nellie (26) & Walter (24) Latowski in the suburb of Cicero (7/18/24). Walter and younger sister Agnes were both employees, CDT obits (Nellie, Walter).
