Skyscrapers to corn fields is the ride to the end of Chicago’s Metra.
Take the train one way and cycle back, or ride from one line to another, or do a loop back to your original station.
General things to know about Metra:
- Bikes are free
- Bring a bungee/cord to secure your bike.
- A limited number of bikes are allowed. Beware if you are a big group.
- Weekdays – bikes are not permitted on trains arriving in Chicago between 6:31 and 9:30 or departing Chicago between 15:00 and 19:00
- Weekends – bikes are permitted at any time
- Be careful with late night trains. They fill up. Tip for not getting stranded – take the train first then cycle home.
- Big events in downtown Chicago may cause bikes to be refused (Lollapalooza, St. Patrick’s Day Parade, Blues Festival, Taste of Chicago, Air and Water Show)
- The city neighborhood Metra stops (Western, Clybourn, Halsted) can feel like your not in the right place.
- Heritage Corridor – no weekend service, 3 morning trains into Chicago, 4 early evening out. Folding bikes only.
- North Central Service – no weekend service
- South Shore Line is its own animal – bikes are allowed from April-October and at certain stations (map shows only bike stops)
